    1. 3.5 StarsThis is Book 2 in the Game Series by Shawnte Borris. We meet all of the characters in Book 1. This is the continuation of Derek and Liz's story as it ended in Book 1. Derek is the Pro Hockey playing twin brother of Kirsten Backhard. Kirsten and Liz are BFF's and their families have known each other for years. Derek moves in with Liz to help her adjust to motherhood and becoming a young widow. What Liz doesn't know is that Derek has had feelings for her since they were teens. The story p [...]

    2. This book was just okay for me. It was pretty tame, in fact a bit boring. I never felt like I new the characters. One thing that really bothered me was that the book's timeline was over a year in length. The story jumped weeks at a time and I felt lost, like something was missing. Descriptions were lacking for me. If it wasn't for BT Urruela being on the cover, I wouldn't have any idea what the H looked like. There was no angst. If I had to describe this story, I would say it was like "a year in [...]

    3. Now that Derek has moved in with Liz to help with with Ryder things have calmed down When he isn't on the road he is at Liz's helping her take care of Ryder. And spending as much time as possible with his sister Kristen before she gives birth to her first baby. Things are going really great with Liz and Derek living under the same roof and are respecting each other boundaries and they are getting to know each better than ever before. Derek decides to take Liz and Ryder to Niagara Falls over East [...]

    5. I've just been given a sneak peek at the first chapter, omg I can't wait for July to read this book Derek has moved in with Liz to help look after Ryder, and Liz Will Liz and Derek get their HEA? will Ryder grow up calling Derek Dad? or will Derek leave when Liz is strong enough to cope on her own July can't come soon enough so we can find out

    6. Derek Backhard has always loved Liz Edison since they were kids growing up but when her husband, Brad, passes away he wants to step up and help her raise her newborn son Ryder. Yet as a professional hockey player much of his life will be on the road.Liz wants to give Derek a chance yet at the same time she knows that he still has his own goals and didn't ask for an instant family. She is also very worried about moving on so quickly after Brad's death and what the reaction from all of their frien [...]

    7. I was provided an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.Playing the Game is the sequel to The Game and is the story of Kirsten’s brother Derek and his romance with Liz. The story picks up on the night that Liz gives birth to her son. Derek has a conversation with Liz’s husband Brad and promises to take care of both Liz and that baby until Brad can get there. Then tragedy strikes when Brad is killed. The story continues with Derek helping Liz to move on and being there for her so [...]

    8. So I have been a fan of Shawnte’s writing style since I read her book falling for Bentley. I am loyal to a fault when it comes to authors that I truly love their work and who are open and friendly with their fans. I had the pleasure of meeting Shawnte this past year at a booking signing and she is completely like the person she is online. She is funny, sarcastic and personable.I put off reading The Game because I knew when I read it I was going to need the next book immediately…. I kinda wis [...]

    9. I was given an arc of Playing The Game (book 2) by Shawnte for an honest review. This is Derek Backhard's story. It's advised the reader read The Game (book 1) first as you will get to know the characters and will understand book 2 because it leads off where book 1 ended.I was highly anticipating the story, so when I realised it was ready for publishing I jumped at the opportunity to see where this book took me. Shawnte did just what she did in the first bookdrew me straight in to Derek's story. [...]

    10. They always say not to judge a book by it's cover. But let me be honest the cover was part of the hype for me and it's what really drew me in. Especially as a first time reader of Shawnte Borris. That said, I was NOT disappointed. And because I'm totally nontraditional like that, I'll be going back to read the rest of the books in this series.Shawnte had me with all the feels from the Prologue. I cried over Brad - and cried again as Derek and Liz built their lives.Derek is the quintessential best [...]

First off I knew from the Prologue this book was going to make me cry, those first pages were so well written and you feel the emotion of the characters point of view. From there we see it between Derek and Liz. I loved Derek [...]

    12. What a sweet romance with a mix of friendship, lost love and new beginnings. Liz was a new mother but was dealing with the unexpected death of her husband. While surrounded with friends and family Liz was striving to provide a normal life for her son as a single mother. Derek is her best friend’s twin brother and the one person that wants to step in and help Liz deal with this new life. Soon their instant family is complete but there seems to be one thing lacking. The truth of their feelings. [...]

    13. This is my 1st book, I've read by Shawnte Borris (but I feel I have read something else by her but when I look at her books on I don't see anything I have read? that is totally a moment of deja vu? any who?) Loved the book, love the cover, such a fast read, I am such a hockey fan, have you seen the movie "The Cutting Edge"? loved it, check it out if you missed it. I am not sure if you need to read the 1st in the series to know more about this books, characters or to make sense of it all, but I [...]

    14. Wow! what can i say about Playing the Game. Shawnte Borris has blown me away. I feel in love with these characters in The Game. Such a great story. These characters were so relateable, like you could already know these people in your own life. I could definitely party with these ladies. and Chapter 12 my sides are still hurting. The books show a lot of heart and just the right amount of humor. as the line goes in an old movie. Laughter thru tears is my favorite emotion. and Shawnte delivered a l [...]

    15. I was so excited to finally get to read this book, I read the preview months ago and was hooked immediately. This book tugged at everything in my heart, oh man, all the feels. Derek and Liz's story allows you to go through every emotion possible, and the journey is amazing. This book has great meat to it. I love that the chapters go back and forth between Liz and Derek, I love when you get to know each character personally. And Shawnte wrote the hell out of this book. Seriously I want to be frie [...]

    16. This has been a much anticipated book! While reading book 1, something pulled me toward Derek. I wanted to know what was going on in that head of his. All Derek wants to do is be there for the people he loves. So when he decides to step up and help Liz out with Ryder, it shows us how much he loves and cares for her. But while he is helping her out, he is also struggling to keep his longtime feelings to himself. But all he has to do is speak from the heart to find out that his feelings are not on [...]

    17. Sweet LoveI have been anticipating this book forever and I can happily say I was not disappointed. It's heartbreaking how Liz & Derek's love story starts but it couldn't have had a better ending. Be sure to read The Game first so you know who is who and what's going on. That's very important. One Click both books right now.

    18. Received a copy. Great read! Get hooked from prologue and continue the journey until the end. Derek and Liz have a roller coaster of a ride. You get the emotions of tears, laughter and love. I love this story and how each character grabs you. The characters make you feel like part of the story. Fabulous story, great characters and one fabulous emotional ride.

    19. I was one of the lucky few to receive a sneak peek of Playing The Game by Shawnte Borris. The much anticipated book two of THE GAME, Derek's story. The intensity of Derek's true and raw emotions was hair raising! Will Derek and Liz have their happily ever after? We will find out in July!

    20. I was given a sneak peek of the first two chapters of Derek's book!!! All I can say is I have been waiting for a very long time for this book & Shawnte has not disappointed me!!! I can't wait for the rest of my Derek's story!!!!!

    24. If you like hockey and a good love story, then look no further than Playing the Game by Shawnte Borris. Well written, the story tugs at your heart strings and keeps you turning page after page even when it makes you tear up. Grab the tissues because you will need them!Derek Backhard has been in love with Liz Edison for years, but never admitted it to himself, at least not out loud. And besides, she ended up with his best friend Brad, however, on the day Liz and Brad’s baby is set to be born, a [...]

    25. This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I loved this one from the start. Her cover choice was amazing and the story was so heartwarming. Brad is sitting at the airport trying to get home to his wife who is in labor. Knowing he isn't going to make it though, he makes sure she has family there to be by her side. After sitting and sitting they finally get on the way and get into the air. Liz is desperately hoping her husband will make it on time but she knows he probably won't. [...]

    26. 3.5 StarsPlaying the Game is book two in Shawnte Borris’ The Game Series and the continuation of Derek and Liz’s story. I would highly recommend that you read book one before settling down with this one for the back story and initial introduction to Borris’ characters. Borris’ story is exactly what you would expect. Two people thrown together due to promises made during a time of loss, new life, and friendship. No ah-hah moments, no angst, and unfortunately no real build up of these two [...]

    27. 4 stars!“I’ve missed that carefree laugh.”“Thanks for giving it back to me.”I knew before I even started, that reading this book was going to make me fall for Derek even more. Playing The Game starts off right where The Game ends. Even though this is about a different couple, I would recommend that you do read book 1 prior to starting this so that you get the full history of these interconnected characters. Derek and Liz's story is a bittersweet one for me. I liked Liz's past, but I'm [...]

    28. Playing the Game leaves off right where The Game - Kirsten Backhard ends. You have to read The Game first. Playing the Game is a little more serious, not as much goofing around. The characters have matured and are experiencing new life changes. This doesn't take away from the story at all. The characters are still funny when they all get together and the girls are still muff-diving BFFs. Playing the Game is Derek and Liz's story. I really love Derek Backhard. He is sweet and supportive. I love h [...]

    29. Fron the prologue alone I knew his would be a different kind of hockey story. It was more character driven and about a player who's a veteran. It comes to making decisions and realizing what's important in his life.I honestly found this book after seeing BT was on the cover. Of course the hockey fan in me was also intrigued. the cover reflects the main character which is great. I liked it focused on a another aspect in a atheletes career. A lot of solid hockey moments as well and funny secondary [...]
